INGLE, Douglas Herbert – Trooper – 7931772,  7th Queen’s Own Hussars, Royal Armoured Corps

He was born on 8th July 1920, only son of Herbert INGLE, a postman in Ramsey for many years, & Ethel May INGLE of 1 Field Terrace, Ramsey, attended Ramsey Grammar School from 1931-37, passed the School Certificate – reaching credit standard in four subjects.  On leaving school, he entered the service of the L.N.E.R. as a clerk, starting at Ramsey St. Marys, and later at Holme, Littleworth & Ramsey.  Called up for service in January 1941, he passed tests in driving, maintenance and wireless, and little more than six months later was drafted to the Libyan area and then to northern Borneo.  He died of wounds received in action whilst serving with the 7th Hussars in the Indian theatre of war on Wednesday, 1st April 1942, aged 21 years, and is commemorated on the Rangoon Memorial, situated in the Taukkyan War Cemetery, Myanmar (Burma).      [Also on Ramsey Grammar School memorial]  He is remembered on the Ramsey War Memorial.

Douglas INGLE, R. T. R.  His name was inscribed on the original Wooden tablet in Sports Pavilion on Playing Field at Ramsey Grammar School. INGLE - Ethel Mary

Research by Joan Whitwell = No list of names commemorating the people of Ramsey who died as a cause that could be attributed to the two World Wars would be complete without the mention of those who lost their lives when an enemy aircraft dropped four high-explosive bombs on Ramsey Town at 23.12p.m. on Saturday night, 22nd August 1942.  Bombs completely demolished two houses, and many others were so badly damaged by the blasts that the occupants had to be evacuated.  Other buildings, including the Methodist Chapel, the Council School and the Telephone Exchange, were also damaged.

Mrs. Ethel Mary INGLE, aged 53, of 1 Field Terrace, was killed and her husband, Herbert INGLE, was injured, when a bomb dropped on their home.  Mr. & Mrs. INGLE had recently heard that their only son had died of wounds while serving with the 7th Hussars in Burma.  She was buried in Ramsey cemetery.
