Arthur Wyman Garton.

Arthur was born in Ramsey, Huntingdonshire on the 6-12-1893 the son of George & Louisa Charlotte Garton.  He enlisted in the 2/1st H. C. B. some time before the17/12/1915, when his name first appears, being given the number 1728.  He enlisted at their H.Q. in St. Mary's Street Huntingdon.  Records also indicate that he later transferred into the 3/1st H.C.B., but no reason was given for the move.

He was posted to the base depot B. E. F. France on 26th July 1916, he was rationed up to and for that day. Order was part 2 No. 171 issued by W. L. Stephenson, 2/Lieut. & acting Adjutant, 2/1st Hunts. Cyclist Battalion. The order was issued at Well Camp Alford at 8-00 p.m., 28th July 1916.  When in France he was place in the 1st Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment and given the new regimental number 39269.

He died of wounds on the 24th October 1916 whilst serving as a private with the 1st Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment.  He was buried at Varennes Military Cemetery, Somme, France in grave I-E-15.  He died aged 23.

   He is the uncle of John W. Dodson - many thanks to him for background family data.

I recently visited his grave and took this photograph.
