Sydney appears to have been living in Park Street, London Road, Fletton with his 1st wife Edith in 1914, when he joined the Cyclists.

Information from the HCB Gazette, Spring edition 1915 indicated that he was one of four Sergeants in F company of the 1/1st HCB - he was one of a large batch of 1/1st HCB men who had been promoted.   Local newspaper entries indicate that by 17th October 1914 Lance Sergeant S. Butler had been promoted to the rank of Sergeant at the time it was indicated that he was still serving in F Company.

Sergt. S. Butler attended the re-union of the H. C. B. 'old boys' held in the 'Golden Lion' Stanground on Friday 4th, November 1932.

His father was Charles Butler (1853-1945), a local businessman in Old Fletton and his Grandfather, Charles Butler Senior (1834-1916) was a founder member of Peterborough Cycling Club in the 1880s, and was one of the first owners in Peterborough of a modern pneumatic-tyre Singer cycle circa 1891.

Sydney Butler died in 1938 and is buried in Fletton Municipal Cemetery.
