Thomas enlisted in the HCB on the 21/10/1914 at Huntingdon, where he was posted into the 2/1sr [Reserve Battalion], he gave his address as coming from Hartford.

. Pte. T. F. Upchurch 110 from Huntingdon - He was one of 20 men from Yorkshire left on (Monday,14/12/1914 for a rest camp. The men who were in the charge of L/t. Hankin (of St. Ives) were sent to be re enlisted into the Cyclist Corps of the regular Army. They were some of the 200 men who had volunteered some four weeks before.

. He later transferred into the Army Cyclist Corps. 7DCC 15th CCB with the number of 579.
