Funeral
Of A Fletton Soldier
Private George Thaxer of St. Margaret's Road, Fletton, died in
King George's Hospital, London, as a result of' wounds received three
weeks previously. Prior to joining the Hunts Cyclists he was employed by
the
London
Brick Company, and was well known in local football circles. After
training in
Lincolnshire
he was transferred to the Royal Berks., and with them went to the front.
He was on sentry duty when a shell burst near him and effected serious
wounds. Every attention was given to him, both in
France
and in
England
, but he eventually succumbed. He was buried at Old Fletton on Saturday,
the first part of the service was held in
London Road
, Wesleyan Chapel. It was conducted by the Rev. G. H. Barker and Mr. A.
Ridgeway, the latter giving a short address, and the following Sunday
evening, Mr. Warner Pond spoke on the life and character of the
deceased, and of his connection with the London Road church, where he
had been a member and a teacher. Many floral tributes
were laid on the grave. |
