Leslie J. Smith.

From a local newspaper dated 12/8/1916  =  Private L. J. Smith, 2/22nd Battalion, London Regiment second son of Mrs. Broughton, St. Margaret's Road, Old Fletton, was killed in action on August 4th. In a letter to Mrs. Broughton, Captain Graham Colmer, commanding D Company, 2/22nd London Regiment, describes Private Smith in the following terms: "He came to me in a draft from his old battalion, 1st Hunts. and was always very popular with his comrades in the company, and in the regiment. His death is mourned by officers and men alike. 1 always regarded him as one of my most reliable soldiers, 1 am proud to say that he died at his post, and in the execution of his duty."
