Arthur Shepherd.

The Arthur Shepherd was in B company the 2/1st HCB – his number was 1179  – on enlistment he said he came from Papworth St. Agnes enlisting in January 1915.  He was posted to the 3rd Bedfordshire Regiment [Pte. Number 43417]  and went with them to France on the 27th July 1916 [to back up numbers of men killed on the 1st day of the battle of the Somme].  Like many other HCB men he was wounded in 1916 and was in hospital – wounded in left thigh and again wounded on the 6/9/1918.

His parent was only identified as ‘A’. Shepherd – records also indicate that he was also attached to the Hertfordshire Regiment for a short period of time.

He met my wife in 1916 at a field hospital near Louth or Sutton on sea, and married in 1920.

Arthur had a brother Horace who also served in the H. C. B  enlisting in HCB before May 1915, stating that he was a farm labourer from Papworth St Agnes and Charles, another brother,  who did not serve in the H.C.B.
