Owen Jesse Reed was born in 1896 - his birth being registered in the September quarter of 1896 ref - St. Neots 3b, 448.

Owen enlisted in the HCB shortly before the 18/6/1915, he gave his address as Offord Cluny. He was posted to A Company in the 2/1st Battalion of the HCB. His number allocated in the HCB as either 1206 or 1226. There are separate note stating that there was a problem with his allocated number.

He was posted to the base depot B.E.F. France on 26th July 1916, he was rationed up to and for that day. Order was part 2 No. 171 issued by W. L. Stephenson, 2/Lieut. & acting Adjutant, 2/1st Hunts. Cyclist Battalion. The order was issued at Well Camp Alford at 8-00 p.m., 28th July 1916.

He was then posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment in France with the new Army number of 43073.
