Local newspaper entries indicate that by 18th December 1914 Private F. Royston had been promoted to the rank of Provisional Corporal at the time it was indicated that he was serving as soldier number 665 in D Company of the 2/1st Huntingdonshire Cyclist Battn. He later transferred to another Regiment  and was allocated the Army number

Sergeant F. Royston - CRICKET LEAGUE - Notice - Under Battalion orders, issued by Lieut. Col. M. D. Barkley, Commanding Officer, 2/1st Huntingdonshire Cyclist Battalion issued at Beechlands, Skegness, on 2nd August 1918 at 5:00 p.m., and signed by W. J. Satchell (Captain and Adjutant), orders being for the following day i.e. 3rd August 1918, records indicate that he was one of the contingent of the 2/1st HCB & the 2/6th [Cyc] Batn. Suffolk Regiment joint Cricket Teams who were to play against a Skegness and District team. on Monday 5th August at 2-00pm.

 

He was promoted in the Huntingdonshire Reserve Battalion from Corporal to Sergeant December 1914. (In an order raised at 7.00 pm, Vine Cottage, Chapel St. Leonards, on 5 March 1917 by W. L Stephenson, Lieut. and acting Adjt. (2/1st).

 

He held the existing rank of Sergeant in D company (2.1) . His new substantive rank was to be Sergeant and was effective from 24/2/1915. This order was issued under The Army Council Instruction No.115 of 1917. ref 156/2) F. Royston - By the 5/3/1915 he was one of six men of the 2/1st H C B to be promoted from Corporal to acting Sergeant. At the time he was in E Company.
