Killed
While Fetching Water Private H. T. Pettit, Bedfordshire Regiment, has been
killed in France, he was the youngest son of Mrs. Pettit, 197 High Street,
Old Fletton, his age being 37. He had been in the firing line for the past
eighteen months, and was recently home on leave. The following letter has
been received by his mother from his 2nd Lt: "I much regret to inform
you of the death of Pie H. T. Pettit, who was killed by the bursting of a
shell while he was endeavoring to obtain water for himself and his
comrades in the front line. As his platoon officer, 1 always found him a
good fellow of a cheerful disposition, helping his comrades whenever the
opportunity occurred, and his loss is much felt by all who knew him".
