William Makey.

William enlisted on the 26/10/1914 in the H C B directly from his home in Godmanchester, Huntingdonshire, at the H. Q. of the H C B at St. Mary's Street, Huntingdon where he was a private, given the number 791 and posted to the 2/1st Battalion.  He was promoted in the Huntingdonshire Reserve Battalion from Corporal to Sergeant December 1914.  [William Makey - By the 5/3/1915 he was one of six men of the 2/1st H C B to be promoted from Corporal to acting Sergeant. At the time he was indicated as being in B Company.]

The following information was kindly provided by his Grandson with information extracted from family history and old photographs -  many thanks to Julian Makey.

He also later was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in the HCB as there is a photo of him with his son, born 1913, which would put him at this rank in about 1914. He went on to serve in the Royal Engineers.

By the 5/3/1915 he was one of six men of the 2/1st H C B to be promoted from Corporal to acting Sergeant. At the time he was in B Company.

William served in the H.C.B with a J. Harris who was at Sutton on Sea [2/1st Battalion] and had a connection with Stukeley in Huntingdonshire as the connection mentioned a pub in the village as well as him being in the Machine Gun Corps. there are two possible men this could be Jack Harris or John Harris.

William also is known to have served in the H.C.B with Harold Thackray [Local Builder] and Tom Gifford [father of Josh the racehorse trainer.
