31/8/1918    Woodston Man Killed In Italy.   Lance Corporal Frank Lewis, Royal Warwicks, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Lewis, Belsize Avenue, Woodston, was killed in action on August 9th in Italy. The Chaplain in a letter to his mother says: "He was struck by a bullet during an enemy bombardment on the 9/10th and never regained consciousness. Your lad gave himself up for his God and country, and when the first sharp onset of your grief is over you will be able to look upon that sacrifice with thankfulness and pride, and God will give him back to you in his own good time. 1 laid all that was mortal of him to rest yesterday afternoon in a little graveyard which was by the side of a beautiful road, shut in by thousands of Fir trees".

He was killed in Action, Barenthal, Assiage, Italy on the 10/8/1918.  His parents were Mr. J. Lewis & Fanny Lewis.

Many thanks to Tony Stubbs for going to the grave and taking the photo and for Richard Lewis for providing some of the family details.
