Charles Evelyn Gray

Charles joined the HCB  from Alconbury on the 27/10/1914 when he enlisted at Huntingdon H. Q. in St. Mary's Street. He was posted to B Company of the 2/1st Battalion with the number 805 - he served as a private

He later transferred into the 1st Bedford Regiment and was wounded before the 30/11/1917 when he was noted as being in hospital in Sheffield.

From a local newspaper 1/12/1917 - Pte. C. Gray, 1st Bedfords, of Alconbury, has been invalided to England, and is in hospital in Sheffield.

He was posted to the base depot B. E. F. France on 26th July 1916, he was rationed up to and for that day. Order was part 2 No. 171 issued by W. L. Stephenson, 2/Lieut. & acting Adjutant, 2/1st Hunts. Cyclist Battalion. The order was issued at Well Camp Alford at 8-00 p.m., 28th July 1916.

At the time he was a Private in B Co. 2/1st HCB.

The photo opposite shows Charles in the uniform of the H. C. B. as a lance corporal - he also wears the badge, over his right hand side breast pocket, indicating that he had volunteered for 'Imperial Service'.  As a Territorial Battalion the H. C. B. had to volunteer to serve overseas.
