John Francis Evans.

John Francis Evans = Private 544 in 'B' Company the 2/1st HCB.
He was born and lived at Steeple Gidding, enlisting on 05/10/1914 at Huntingdon.
Transferred to 1st Bedford Regiment as Private 43005.
He was Killed in action aged 21 years - France and Flanders on the 3/9/1916 and commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial pier 2C.He died as Acting Corporal - 1st Bedford Regiment.
His parents were Mark and Ann from Great Gidding.
He was posted to the base depot B. E. F. France on 26th July 1916, he was rationed up to 
and for that day. Order was part 2 No. 171 issued by W. L. Stephenson, 2/Lieut. & 
acting Adjutant, 2/1st Hunts. Cyclist Battalion.  The order was issued at Well Camp Alford at 8-00 p.m., 28th July 1916. 
He was promoted in the Huntingdonshire Reserve Battalion from Private to Lance Corporal 
December 1914 was also in 3/st. H. C. B. at some stage. 

Local newspaper entries indicate that by 2/1/1915 Lance Corporal J. F. Evans [B Co.] had been promoted to the rank of acting Corporal.  

 
. Local newspaper entries indicate that by 18th December 1914 Private J. F. Evans had been promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal at the time it was indicated that he was serving as soldier number 544 in the 2/1st Huntingdonshire Cyclist Battn.
