George Martin Baxter.

  George was baptised on September 20th, 1896. He was the son of George [profession Wheelwright] & Laura Baxter [nee Haynes]. George and Laura were married in 1879, the marriage being recorded in the records for September quarter - ref 1879 St.Neots 3b, 471.

George enlisted in the HCB before the 19/11/1915 when he is first found in their records. He was posted to the 2/1st Battalion
Although wounded in the war he survived, returned home and then married Gomer Ellen Reed on May 22nd, 1926 at Offord Darcy Church. Records indicate that hew was twice gassed, the second time he is noted as being in a Base Hospital in France.

An undated local newspaper indicates that he was one of a batch of 18 men that were recruited to the Hunts. Cyclist Battalion November 1915.

When he went to France he was transferred into the Royal Naval Division.

He was noted as being home on leave September 1918.

He survived the war and later died whilst living at High Street, Offord Cluny and was buried in Offord Cluny, 22 August 1950, aged 53.  George [Martin] was employed as a Motor Engineer for a local company.
