J. Afford.

. From a local newspaper dated 15/9/1916.

Promotion for Bravery.

Mr. Chas Afford, of Offord, has had the gratifying news that his son, Corpl. J. Afford, of the Beds. Regt., has been promoted for gallantry in the field.

His regiment was in one of the big attacks when the Captain leading in his men, fell wounded by machine gun. Afford had a very narrow escape. A machine gun opened up on him, and he was slightly wounded, but fortunately not put out of action, and was able to get the Captain under cover. Unfortunately the Captain died a few hours afterwards. For his act of Bravery Corpl. was promoted to the rank of Company Sergeant-Major and awarded the D.C.M.
