Edmonds W. J. Details Extracted from Unnamed newspapers taken from the Norris Museum at St. Ives date 18th February 1919 = Pte. W. J. Edmonds, of the Canadian Batt., has been to visit his home in Abbotsley for ten days' sick leave. He was wounded in the great advance on Passchendaele Ridge, and was sent to the Kitchener Hospital at Brighton. He has been at a Convalescent home at Epsom for a month. He has now quite recovered from his wound, and looks very fit and well. We were very glad to see him again after such a long absence, as he had not been home since he left England for Canada three and a half years ago.

Gibson, formerly of the village, writes from Cairo that he has had 10 days' holiday and spent them in a trip up the Nile and saw the Pyramids, the resting places of the ancient kings of Egypt, the Sphinx, and other wonderful sights of that ancient land.

Gilbert Harry 25th Sept 1914 = Territorials. Dec 15 1916 - = 'On one occasion.' relates Gunner Harry Gilbert, ' we were in a trench behind our parapet when a German shell dropped plump on it, exploded, and it up and down on the men in the trench, literally burying us alive, but we came to life again.'

Gilbert Herbert 25th Sept 1914 = Kitchener's now at Shoreham. Walter Jaikens is lying wounded in hospital at the Curragh. He was in over 20 engagements, and was shot in the leg. He hopes to be about again shortly. He belongs to the West Sussex.

Jaikens Horace Dec 15 1916 - unknown newspaper entry - Private Horace Jaikens was last heard from three weeks ago. He was still at Giessen in Hesse, Darmstadt, and was quite well. Apparently he was wounded when taken prisoner.

Jaikens Walter 25th Sept 1914 = Formerly 16th Beds., now Guard over prisoners at Shorncliffe. December 28th 1917 -= n Tuesday last a wedding took place at our Church between Miss Bertie Barford [second daughter of the late Mr. George Barford] and Lance Corporal Walter Jaikens, of the Royal Engineers.
The bride was attired in cream silk, trimmed with military braid and lace, with wreath of orange blossom and fall. She was given away by Mr. S. Peacock, her brother-in-law, and the best man was Mr. B. Babbington, brother-in-law of the bridegroom. The two youthful bridesmaids were Miss Julia Peacock [niece to the bride] and Miss Ivy Jaikens [sister of the bridegroom], who were attired in blue dresses, trimmed with blue and gold.
The bride carried a lovely bouquet of lilies and carnations, and the little bridesmaids those of chrysanthemums. The service was fully choral. The officiating clergyman was the Rev. S. Meade, and the organist Miss Kathleen Gilbert, who played the wedding march as the bridal party left the Vestry. The wedding presents were numerous, valuable and useful, that the bridegroom to the bride being a lovely clock brought by him from France. The youthful bridesmaids he gave beautiful brooches, also brought by him from France. Mr. Jaikens was one of the heroes of Mons, where he was wounded.

Mrs. H. Page, High Green, has received a communication stating that her son, Private H. Page, of the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, is lying ill at the General Hospital at Boulogne, France. Wills James July 6th 1917 = Pte. James Wills, of the South African Contingent. who was killed on Easter Monday, was the son in law of Mr. S. Sandford, formerly of this village but connected for many years with the G. N. R. He was concerned with ostrich farming in South Africa, and probably his widow will proceed to his home as soon as circumstances permit.

Wright Philip His name appears on the War Memorial in grounds of Abbotsley Parish Church. 19th January 1917. = The Late Lce. Corpl. P. Wright.
Mr. A. Wright, of Warminster, Wilts., sends us the following letter he has received in reference to his brother, Lce. Corpl. P. Wright, [Abbotsley], killed in action on December 23rd.   'Dear Mr. Wright, - I am writing these few lines just to let you know how much I feel your brother's death, and to tell you, and his platoon officer, how I looked upon him as one of my most promising N.C.O.'s. He always did his duty bravely and faced the many hardships with a cheerful smile. In fact, he was every thing a soldier should be. His death was instantaneous, a shell bursting in the trench. He was at the time in charge of a few men in a lonely post, and we buried him where he fell. May it be some consolation that he died so bravely for the cause of all that is just and right, fighting for his King and Country, a real noble cause. If there are any questions you would like to ask, please write to me, yours sincerely, R. W. H. Bowles 2nd Lieut.'

Page	H.	Enlisted before June 25th 1915. St. Neots and County Times - date 13/3/1915. Abbotsley Mrs. H. Page, High Green, has received a communication stating that her son, Private H. Page, of the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, is lying ill at the General Hospital at Boulogne, France. A photo of Private Page appears among our pictures. Another of Mrs. Page's sons is serving in the Hunts Cyclists' Battalion.

Staughton	George	His name appears on the War Memorial in grounds of Abbotsley Parish Church. Dec 15 1916 - newspaper entry - George Staughton sailed for Canada with the Canadian Contingent on December 10th 1915.

Webb	Arthur	Webb - In loving memory of Arthur Webb, who died March 13th, 1918, aged 30. This day brings back to memory dear, One who was called to rest, And these who think of him to-day, Are those who loved him best. From his loving Mother, Sisters and Brothers, Rose Cottage, Abbotsley. His name appears on the War Memorial in grounds of Abbotsley Parish Church. 25th Sept 1914 = Driver Field Artillery, in France.

Lce. Corpl. E. Webb, youngest son of James Webb, Abbotsley, Aged 20. His name appears on the War Memorial in grounds of Abbotsley Parish Church.

Webb	Jack	25th Sept 1914 = enlisted at Welwyn [Fusiliers]
Wills	James	July 6th 1917 = Pte. James Wills, of the South African Contingent. who was killed on Easter Monday, was the son in law of Mr. S. Sandford, formerly of this village but connected for many years with the G. N. R. He was concerned with ostrich farming in South Africa, and probably his widow will proceed to his home as soon as circumstances permit.
Wignall	Charles Edward	His name appears on the War Memorial in grounds of Abbotsley Parish Church.
Wright	Philip	His name appears on the War Memorial in grounds of Abbotsley Parish Church. 19th January 1917. = The Late Lce. Corpl. P. Wright. Mr. A. Wright, of Warminster, Wilts., sends us the following letter he has received in reference to his brother, Lce. Corpl. P. Wright, [Abbotsley], killed in action on December 23rd. 'Dear Mr. Wright, - I am writing these few lines just to let you know how much I feel your brother's death, and to tell you, and his platoon officer, how I looked upon him as one of my most promising N.C.O.'s. He always did his duty bravely and faced the many hardships with a cheerful smile. In fact, he was every thing a soldier should be. His death was instantaneous, a shell bursting in the trench. He was at the time in charge of a few men in a lonely post, and we buried him where he fell. May it be some consolation that he died so bravely for the cause of all that is just and right, fighting for his King and Country, a real noble cause. If there are any questions you would like to ask, please write to me, yours sincerely, R. W. H. Bowles 2nd Lieut.'

Denny	Peter Frederick	Peter died on the 11th of April 1944 aged 22 years. His name appears on the War Memorial in grounds of Abbotsley Parish Church.
Harper	Arthur George	Arthur died on Thursday the 30th March 1944 at the age of 20 years. He was the son of George Thomas Harper & Winifred Amelia, of Abbotsley, Huntingdonshire. His name appears on the War Memorial in grounds of Abbotsley Parish Church.
Harper	John	His name appears on the War Memorial in grounds of Abbotsley Parish Church.

The inscription on the war memorial reads - 'REMEMBER BEFORE GOD THE MEN OF ABBOTSLEY WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918.
These soldiers notes were found whilst research in the soldiers who fought in the Huntingdonshire Cyclist Battalions.
